My Bad...

So..... hi.

My apologies for the blog silence. Life's been rather hectic of late but I've been doodling away (and just not updating here). Other spots to see me update too is my Facebook page, Instagram (where I update about everything!) and twitter -  iff'n you're interested.

Anyhow, what have I been up to?
- I have some comic pages to share with you (Blade Runner done in Mike Mignola's style!).
- I have, of course, been drawing pretty ladies.
- I'll be starting a series of portriats of Alt girls soon (and more news to follow on that).
- an Amanda Palmer project
- an Emilie Autumn inspired comic.

And hopefully a rejig of the blog soon enough. I'm working on my branding so things should all look spiffy and super professional soon.

I've also been working away on a submission for a potential gig. Ask anyone, I'm ridiculously excited about this. Fingers crossed! Heck, toes crossed too!


You can also expect a lot of comic artist gushing. I'm getting back in the habit of reading again (oh, how I missed you!) and, boy, have I seen a whole lot of pretties. I just finished Batwoman Elegy with some gorgeous work (and superb paneling) by J.H. Williams III and Dave Stewart on colours. It is a thing of beauty. And seriously...dat paneling! Another one I''m currently reading (at long last) is Scarlet! Oh, you pretty thing. Alex Maleev's artwork is just stunning, and Bendis tells a fantastic story. I'll come back to all of this again...but with less gushing and more actual talking.

I'll leave you with something shiny 'til next time. If you haven't seen the movie The Devil's Carnival (from the same folks behind Repo! The Genetic Opera) then go put your eyes and ears to it. It's a fantastical horror music. And it looks amazing - the sets, the costumes, the make up. From the get go of this movie I loved it's aesthetic. And the songs are brilliant. It's exactly my cup of tea. Speaking of which, it also stars Emilie Autumn as the vicious Painted Doll. The story is really interesting, with a sequel in the works to follow the plot's flip side. It follows the (after)lives of three unfortunate souls, each representing one of Aesop's fables.
I was incredibly impressed with it - a rarity for me and movies lately. If it sounds like it might be your thing, then definitely check it out.
(This video is only slightly spoilery, but the outcome is kind of expected.)

Zoetica Ebb and Shakespeare

A few weeks ago, as part of my reward from the Secret Guide to Alternative Beijing Kickstarter, I had a Skype chat with the wonderful Zoetica Ebb about my work. It was incredibly helpful and ended the call with a list of things to try, work on, look up and some really cool artists - like Franz von Bayros.

So, when I started my assignment for the Bologna Book Fair, which probably won't be entered until next year, I kept artists like von Bayros, Beardsley, Clarke and Dame Darcy in mind. Basically, black and white, painful detail and crossed eyes by the end of this. I chose A Midsummer Night's Dream for my story which works perfectly with this style. This will definitely stay in my artist's arsenal.

Still unfinished. I'm not 100% happy with it but I'll keep it as a back up.

Lou

I've been playing around with creating a new character for some adventures... and Lou was the result. 

I'm still working her out but I know enough to get to drawing and plotting and let her work herself out a bit. 

The opening I thought of is a bit odd but I think it'll be a good introduction to her.. err, I hope. I'm a little ramble-y today so I'll just post the first page and skedaddle. I have it with and without text. Once I get the printer back on my side I can post prettier versions.

Monster Mommas

I've been wanting to do something like this for awhile. Yesterday I came into some A3 card (well... I bought it...) and began to plot. A bigger space to work with makes for some fun times. I do need to buy more black ink though, and a good watercolour set when money allows for it. 

Anyway, so far here's my monster mothers, Morticia Addams and Lily Munster.

This is fast becoming the strangest and most fun ways of learning about animals and other cultures... This lady is related to the Takin, the national animal of Bhutan. Also, Bhutan's flag has a dragon on it! And the king's crown has a skull... Learning is fun.

She'll do... but the next one is going big or going home.
